Dr. James Maas is a seasoned dentist with a passion for delivering exceptional dental care. Dr. Maas graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics in 1998. With over two decades of experience, Dr. Maas has dedicated his career to promoting oral health and creating beautiful smiles for his patients.
With a strong sense of community and professional collaboration, Dr. Maas is an active member of the American Dental Association, showcasing his dedication to staying at the forefront of dental advancements and best practices. He is also a proud member of the American Orthodontic Society and the Black and Gold Study Club, organizations that reflect his continuous pursuit of knowledge and excellence in the field. A testament to his leadership skills and involvement within the dental community, Dr. Maas proudly served as the president of the University District Dental Association, demonstrating his commitment to advancing the field at both the local and professional levels.
Dr. Maas has contributed significantly to dental education, serving as an adjunct professor at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics from 1998 to 2018. As an adjunct professor, Dr. Maas was honored to be nominated by his peers to become a distinguished member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Dental Society, an accolade that reflects his outstanding character, leadership, and dedication to the dental profession.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Maas treasures his role as a family man. Married to his wife, Kari, who is a professor at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics, they have built a life together with their two children. Dr. Maas is not only committed to his family but is an avid Hawkeye Football fan, showcasing his enthusiasm for the local sports scene.
Outside the dental office, Dr. Maas has a passion for the great outdoors. His favorite pastime is deer and turkey hunting, where he finds both relaxation and excitement in nature. Additionally, he cherishes moments spent with family and friends in the picturesque surroundings of Okoboji, creating lasting memories.
Originally hailing from Oskaloosa, Iowa, Dr. Maas has strong ties to the local community. He values the relationships he has built with patients and is committed to providing personalized care to meet their unique dental needs.
Known for his friendly and approachable demeanor, Dr. Maas believes in open communication with his patients. He takes the time to understand their concerns and collaborates with them to achieve optimal oral health and a confident smile.
Julie
Office Manager
The Office Manager, having been with Dr. Maas since his inception in 1998, has a rich history of loyalty and dedication to her role. Beginning as his assistant and later transitioning to the front desk, she has amassed a wealth of experience and knowledge about the inner workings of the office. Her journey from assistant to manager reflects her growth within the practice and her adeptness in handling various responsibilities.
Outside of work, she shares a fulfilling family life with her husband and their twin daughters, who have now blossomed into mothers themselves. The joy of being a grandmother brings her immense happiness, and she cherishes every moment spent with her growing family. Whether it's hosting gatherings with friends or creating lasting memories with her grandkids, she finds solace and fulfillment in the company of loved ones.
Her years of dedication, coupled with her nurturing nature, make her an indispensable member of both Dr. Maas's team and her own family circle.
Amy
Dental Hygiene Assistant
Amy has been an integral part of our dental team since 2011, working alongside the dental hygienist to ensure top-notch patient care in dental hygiene. With her wealth of experience and commitment to excellence, Amy plays a vital role in creating a comfortable and positive experience for our patients.
Beyond her professional duties, Amy treasures spending quality time with her loved ones. Whether it's enjoying moments with family or catching up with friends, she values these connections dearly.
Amy is also an avid reader and audiobook enthusiast. She finds enjoyment in the pages of books and the immersive world of audio narratives. This passion for literature not only enriches her personal life but also reflects her continuous pursuit of knowledge and growth.

Jenny
Dental Hygienist
Meet Jenny, our dedicated dental hygienist with almost four decades of experience in delivering top-notch oral care. Graduating from the esteemed University of Iowa in 1985, Jenny has been an integral part of our dental practice, collaborating closely with Dr. Maas to ensure our patients receive the highest standard of care. Jenny and Dr. Maas have worked together for over 25 years cultivating a seamless collaboration focused on delivering exceptional oral care to our patients.
Jenny's dedication to oral health extends beyond routine cleanings and treatments; she is deeply passionate about educating patients on the importance of maintaining optimal oral hygiene. With her extensive knowledge and expertise, she empowers individuals to take proactive steps towards achieving and preserving a healthy smile, recognizing its vital connection to overall well-being.
Outside the dental office, Jenny enjoys time spent with family and friends. An adventurer at heart, Jenny revels in the beauty of nature, particularly when hiking in the majestic mountains, cross-country skiing through the woods, or camping under the starlit sky with loved ones. With a goal to explore every national park, she embraces each journey as an opportunity for discovery and connection.

Shelly
Dental Hygienist
Shelly, is a dedicated dental hygienist with over 30 years of experience and has had the pleasure of working alongside her brother, Dr. Maas, for much of that time.
Shelly’s journey in dentistry began when she graduated from the University of Iowa in 1989, equipped with the knowledge and passion to help patients achieve and maintain optimal oral health. Over the years, she has developed a deep understanding of the importance of preventive care and patient education in fostering healthy smiles.
While she takes pride in her work, her heart truly belongs to her family and friends. Shelly finds immense joy in spending quality time with them, especially as a grandma. There's something truly magical about watching little ones grow and explore the world. She feels blessed and cherishes those moments.
One of her favorite places to unwind and recharge is at Okoboji. Whether it's soaking up the sun on the beach, enjoying leisurely boat rides on the lake, or simply relishing in the beauty of nature, Okoboji holds a special place in her heart as a peaceful retreat.
